I am a Part 2 Architectural Assistant with a passion for sustainable design. Throughout university I worked to produce buildings which were more than just sustainable. This forward-thinking approach is essential to ensure architecture is designed for the future and focused on its long term environmental impact.
My final year thesis project, titled ‘Grow Your Own High Street’, proposes re-foresting the High Street. It addresses issues of global warming and rising C02 levels as well as problems with high carbon building materials we so heavily rely on in the construction industry. Through foresting the High Street, timber becomes a local and sustainable material source which, during its growth, absorbs huge amounts of C02. Overtime, the timber grown on the High Street can then be harvested by locals and used to develop the High Street as well as the local surroundings.
The scheme envisions a Timber Education Centre, along the High Street, which will teach the community about how to build with, craft and sustainably source wood. Classrooms and timber workshops provide a variety of different teaching spaces whilst the exposed timber structure and soffits allows users to understand timber construction through the physical space itself.
