Project Introduction: The Seaweed Manufacture Centre (SMC) in Barcelona is a making space dedicated to the research, design, and production of sustainable construction materials like tiles and bricks made from seaweed. The existing building will be renovated into a making space and laboratory, with an extension housing offices, design studios, workshops, exhibition spaces, and coffee shops. A new canal will connect the Mediterranean Sea to the site, aiding seaweed transport, cooling the city, increasing biodiversity, and boosting the local economy by due to its deep connection with industrial past history. The project will create a collaborative space for the community, industry professionals, local workers, and artists to share knowledge, promoting sustainable innovation in construction and benefiting the environment.
