The site is located in the heart of Birmingham's city centre in a grade II listed building. The building looks over Victoria Square and Birmingham's Museum and Art Gallery, making it the perfect spot for an intersection hotspot.
The concept for this project was inspired by the natural texture and wrinkle of the skin. The conceptual development began by finding imagery that could inspire models. These samples were created by using material and glue to hold the texture in the fabric.
Experimenting with making bread helped to understand the patterns and stretches that are formed, inspiring how these forms could be used within the space. These sketches highlight the lines and patterns formed in the dough which have been developed into models. By using tights and pins the same stretch and fold patterns to identify the key forms in the dough and how they can be used in the space.
This visual shows the ground floor counter for the bakery. It shows how the ceiling feature hangs over the different zones creating an interesting design, the counter is placed in front of the entrance to create a sense of arrival in the bakery. The floor had been designed as an open plan space to encourage interactions between all users.
This visual shows a feature column travelling through the space to connect to the second floor of the building. The feature is in the space room as the interactive kitchen to ensure the engagement of the user’s scenes on the second floor. Windows have been added to the separating wall of the impressive kitchen and the group collaboration space to floor a connection to the space without it having an impact on nose levels etc.
This visual shows how the second floor has been designed to relax users through different forms of seating while being in a space that is able to engage the user's senses. The built-in seating has been designed to accommodate users to make them feel safe and comfortable in this environment.
