I’m Sarah Russell and I am a Product and Furniture Design graduate.
At BCU I have designed a wide range of products such as tapas boards, space saving plant storage systems and a multi use urn. I have discovered that as I designer I like to challenge the role products play within society as well as embracing the natural beauty found in natural materials. I think design is a key way we can make positive changes in the world and that sustainability should be at the heart of what designers do.
The eternity urn was a design fuelled by my fascination with people’s attitudes when it comes to death as the society we live in rarely talks openly about it. This urn is designed to allow families to grieve together and let go of ashes in multiple ways to aid the grieving process.
The design consists of four stacking urns. One containing a mycelium burial pod for a personal and sustainable burial ceremony, another containing pebbles infused with ash for skimming into water or giving to friends and family members. The last two contain loose ashes for scattering, keeping in the home or getting small amounts turned into cremation jewellery.
The urns are protected by ceramic and ash shells that hold the forms together. Sustainability is key which is why this urn is built to last, if a person wants to change the aesthetics they can simply replace and mix and match the different shells available.
