Fern Whelan

Biography

Fern Whelan is an artist creating work using knit and crochet, with most of her current pieces being created on a domestic knitting machine. She enjoys combining traditional hands-on crafts with contemporary colour pallets and patterns. She finds that knit inherently can make a piece of work fun, as the soft textures mixed with bright colours gives the work a jolly and playful appearance. She aims for the pieces to always have a tactility that makes you want to handle the work. Whelan’s current work explores the consumerism and overconsumption during the 1980’s, combining motifs from 80’s currency with 80’s knitwear design.
