A topic that derived from research into the restoration of The Lost Gardens of Heligan which began in 1990, the once ‘sleeping beauty’ was ‘re-awakened’ by Tim Smit. Honour focuses on the gardeners who fought in the First World War, with many of them sadly not returning home. Heligan house became a hospital for injured soldiers when war broke out and the gardens were left to perish.
A desire to honour.
The collection focuses on upcycling and sustainable practices, deconstructing and reconstructing second-hand and army surplus pieces to create military attire with a twist. Both looks feature hand painting and block printing with contrasting hand embroidery and fabric manipulation.
Through my work, I hope to inspire others to make a change for a better world. My message is “Upcycling garments is hugely important for both the planet and its people; we need to combat landfill waste and re-use and recycle wherever possible in order to save the natural world”.
