Yuzhen Sun practices jewellery art by using the method ‘Internal Observation,’ where she closely examines her own thoughts and feelings in response to the overwhelming flow of information today. Through this method, she learned to condense and transform her experiences into symbols and use metal and mixed media to “preserve” those experiences. Her process is akin to a scientific experiment, delving into decoding and encoding the essence of phenomena, transposing intangible thoughts into tangible forms. This is reflected in her affinity for jewellery practice, particularly in the project like “Blue Protocol,” where she explores the inner consciousness through the symbolic meanings extracted from a dream and transforms the non-material symbols into wearable jewellery and establishes the relationship between symbol, body and space. This project shows her obsession with the sense of order brought by the texture of metals like silver, zinc and copper. She applies metal techniques to develop an avant-garde form of expression. She is drawn to the “Synthetic Encounters: Human: Machine: Interspecies: Art” strand for its relevance to her interest in the complex dynamics between humans, technology, and the natural world.
