I specialise in embroidery for couture fashion textiles. My work is highly emotive and based around socially-driven concepts which help to evoke a strong mood and attitude within the design work. I plan to continue to develop this emerging personal style through further MA study at BCU.
This collection of embroidered design statements for couture fashion aims to initiate discussion around the contemporary issue of women’s safety in our society and highlight how feelings of vulnerability can impact the daily lives of women. I have drawn on personal experiences of fear from being watched or followed in darker hours and coping techniques such as attempting to make myself look physically bigger.
Ideas of feigned bravery or ‘bravado,’ have been expressed through exaggerated and oversized silhouettes, and the use of harsh, tough materials such as leather, rubber and metal elements. Hand and digital embroidery, as well as fabric manipulation techniques have been used to create intensely adorned surfaces that evoke tension and unease.
