As a contemporary jewellery designer, Rong believes that jewellery is an object that carries life and that each piece of jewellery has its own story and symbolism.
The ‘Above Standard’ collection is inspired by the phenomenon of appearance anxiety that arises when people are pulled by popular aesthetic standards. By incorporating standards and measurements into the pieces, aesthetics are digitized, formalized and concretized as a ‘yardstick’ for measuring beauty, provoking a re-examination of beauty and appearance anxiety. Metal structures are designed and fabricated to better demonstrate standards and dimensions.
Rong will also focus on researching the use of new materials in conjunction with contemporary jewellery design. This is because she believes in the constant development of experimentation and innovation, and that the concrete responses generated through research, technique, form, material and extensive discourse will make the work more narrative and exploratory, which is the appeal of jewellery.
