I am Yifei Han and currently a student of GD jewelry major. A special thing of myself is I am a trans-major student from Major of International Studies which is in a very different field from jewellery design. Besides, I am a certified gemologist. My future goal is owning my jewellry business and I am currently working for it.
My project of this semester is a narrative jewellery series, telling the story of my grandmother’s life and death, and exploring my grief over the nature of her passing. Tragically, hers is not a unique case, as mental illness and elderly suicide are a big problem in the world today. I chose the motifs of a broken rope and pearls as central elements among all the pieces, and experimented extensively with different materials, techniques, and symbols. It is my hope that this series of jewellery pieces will illustrate my story clearly and bring awareness of the issue, to remind people that there is always a way out of a hopeless situation, but also to not allow themselves to become so wrapped up in their own life that they are unable to reach out to loved ones in need.
